Toe grips: rubber traction on the nail itself
Toe grips are small rubber caps that fit over each nail tip, functioning like a cleat rather than changing the nail underneath. They’re a reasonable option for a dog whose nails are already a manageable length but who still slides on smooth flooring, or for owners who can’t yet get a dog comfortable with grinding.
The one published gait study on this category, NCBI/PMC: Dr. Buzby’s ToeGrips® Application Results in Minimal Changes in Kinetic Gait Parameters in Normal Dogs, tested grips on dogs with otherwise normal gait and found the grips produced only minimal changes to kinetic gait parameters. That’s a useful, honest data point, but it’s worth being precise about what it does and doesn’t show: it was conducted in dogs without existing mobility problems, so it tells you the grips don’t disrupt a normal gait — not that they measurably improve traction or confidence in a dog that’s already struggling. Owners report the latter anecdotally, and it’s plausible given the mechanism, but the study itself doesn’t establish it.

Paw wax: grip added at the pad, not the nail
Paw wax works on an entirely different part of the foot. It’s a balm — typically a blend of harder waxes like carnauba and beeswax rather than the softer oils used in moisturizing balms — applied directly to the pad. Manufacturer guidance from Musher’s Secret describes it as forming a semi-permeable barrier on the pad that both protects against hot pavement, salt, and ice, and adds grip on smooth indoor flooring once the wax has set.
The tradeoff is that wax addresses the pad’s contact with the floor, not the nail’s interference with that contact. On a dog with genuinely overgrown nails, wax on the pad won’t stop the toe from flexing and skating in the first place — you’re improving grip at a point of contact the dog isn’t fully using. It tends to work best as a complement to nail management, not a substitute for it, and it needs reapplication as it wears off.
