A microchip is a passive, unpowered capsule about the size of a grain of rice that only does anything when a scanner is held over it. One finds your dog. What a microchip actually does
A microchip is inert until scanned. It’s implanted, usually between the shoulder blades, in a quick in-office procedure, and it carries a unique ID number linked to a registry entry with your contact information. It does not track anything and it does not need a battery — that permanence is the entire point. The number only becomes useful when someone runs a scanner over your dog and then looks up that ID in a registry, which is why registration accuracy matters as much as the implant itself.

For a dog who has never gotten loose and lives an indoor, leashed, fenced-yard life, a microchip alone is a reasonable, defensible choice — it’s cheap, permanent, and matches the actual risk.
