Are raw bones safe for dogs to chew? Not as a blanket yes. I treat this question the same way I’d treat a knuckling puppy that might have a disc problem or might just be clumsy — you don’t guess, you look at the actual mechanism in front of you. With bones, the mechanism is simple physics plus microbiology: a large upper fourth premolar meeting something harder than enamel, and raw tissue that can carry bacteria a compromised gut is poorly equipped to handle.

The owner had given a raw marrow bone twice a week for eight months with no problem, until the ninth month, when the dog bit down wrong on a denser section near the bone’s end. What’s actually in a raw bone, microbiologically
Raw bones come attached to raw tissue, and that tissue is not sterile. Where a compromised gut changes the calculus entirely
This is the piece owners skip past, and it’s where I get most decisive. A dog with exocrine pancreatic insufficiency, or any dog managing chronic digestive sensitivity, is a poor candidate for raw bones regardless of fracture risk, because the management plan for that gut is already narrow. That’s not a dosing failure of the enzymes; it’s a mismatch between the chew and the diet plan already in motion. If your dog has a healthy, unremarkable digestive history, that specific risk narrows. The counterargument I take seriously
Raw-feeding advocates make a real point: dogs evolved chewing bone, and supervised raw bone chewing can support jaw strength and provide mental engagement that a soft treat doesn’t. I don’t dismiss that. Where I land, though, is that “dogs evolved to do X” doesn’t mean modern veterinary dentistry and modern raw-meat supply chains carry the same risk profile as a wolf’s kill in the wild — the bones are often denser (weight-bearing marrow bones cut for retail), and the meat is farmed, processed, and stored in ways wild prey never was. The mechanism-aware answer is: the appeal is real, the risk is also real, and the two don’t cancel out just because one side has emotional weight behind it.
The practical rule I give owners
If you’re set on raw bones, treat them the way you’d treat any modality with a real risk-benefit tradeoff: match it to the specific dog, not the category. A structurally sound adult dog with no history of digestive sensitivity, given a single large raw bone under direct supervision and discarded within the hour, faces a materially different risk than a dog with EPI, a small-breed dog with crowded teeth, or a household with an immunocompromised member. Ask your veterinarian to look at your dog’s dental history and GI history specifically — not the category of “raw bones” in the abstract — before you decide.
